The Annual YPIowa Conference is a statewide event that provides the connection, direction and education to challenge Iowa’s young professionals to be active leaders in their community and state. Through roundtable discussions, leadership success stories, breakout sessions and informative discussions from past and current leaders, attendees can leave the conference with a sense of state pride, incentive and knowledge to become engaged in their community.

This year’s main conference speaker will be Matt Mattson, from Carmel, IN, co-founder and President of Phired Up Productions. Today’s society is interconnected, grassroots-driven and empowered. Most businesses are similar—they require collaboration with other companies and organizations to thrive and the best businesses are interdependent with their community. Having staff members that have real relationships with others in their industry and their community leads to a healthy support system for a company’s most important asset—their employees. Mattson will show how to truly maximize one's social potential, understand the progression of momentary choices, consistent patterns of behavior and eventually a lifestyle of Social Excellence in order to push towards the highest level of human connection and leverage relationships to make a meaningful impact on society.

There will be additional breakout sessions throughout the day including:

  • Terri Houston, Senior Director for Recruitment and Multicultural Programs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, presenting “Moving Your Constipated Vision” which will challenge attendees to see their vision at another level. Her second workshop will be “The SPICE of Networking” and will challenge participants to think outside of the box when communicating and connecting to make a first and lasting impression. Houston’s persuasive, energetic and humorous messages of visionary leadership will entertain as well as educate.

  • Mara Sovey is the President of the John Deere Foundation and Director of the Corporate Citizenship Center of Excellence at John Deere. In this capacity, Sovey is responsible for further developing and executing John Deere’s strategy for corporate citizenship, philanthropy and volunteerism on a global basis. “Leadership through Citizenship” will share framework for what it takes to be an outstanding corporate citizen. In addition, Sovey will discuss lessons in leadership and the importance of young professionals’ leadership in order to build the future in Iowa’s communities.
  • Gail Hermesch is a Certified Development Trainer and Key Note Speaker specializing in creating a culture of excellence in professional development. “ How Ordinary People Can Accomplish Extraordinary Results” will ignite the audience to develop into what they were meant to be by learning steps necessary to succeed in today's multi-generation market. Participants will be inspired and motivated to achieve their lifetime goals, both personal and professional.
  • Jon Murad, a Sioux City native, works as a Business Marketing Specialist for IowaWORKS Greater Siouxland and will host a workshop entitled “Boost your Resume.” Iowa’s National Career Readiness Certificate is a credential program based on ACT’s WorkKeys research that provides an objective snapshot of an applicant’s work related skill set and provides a work ready endorsement from ACT. The program allows an employer to compare skill level rather than just years of experience. The speaker will discuss the progress of the program in Iowa and the benefits this system offers for young professionals, employers, economic development and education.

Young professionals in attendance will also get the opportunity to meet and network with one another and discuss ways to ensure the state will be an attractive place for Iowans to live and work in the future.  Hosted by the Siouxland YP organization, Sioux City Growth Organization, this all day event will wrap up with Sioux City’s First Annual YP Day Celebration. Additionally, the night before on Thursday, September 29, a welcome reception will be held at Stoney Creek Inn.
